New co-director joins Crépeau Centre leadership

The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that Professor Michelle Cumyn will join the leadership team of the Paul-André Crépeau Centre for Private and Comparative Law. She will team up with current director Professor Mark Antaki, BCL’96, LLB’96, who has been at the helm of the renowned centre since 2020. They will serve as co-directors until 2026.

A prominent civil and comparative law expert, Michelle Cumyn, BCL’92, LLB’92, joined 鶹AV Law as full professor in 2023. She was editor of Les Cahiers de droit from 2007 to 2010 and she held the Chaire de redaction juridique Louis-Philippe-Pigeon from 2015 to 2020. She is the editor of the Minerve Collection published by the Presses de l'Université Laval. She has participated in several working groups of the Uniform Law Conference of Canada and is a member of its advisory committee. She is co-author, with Wainwright Professor Emeritus Pierre-Gabriel Jobin, Ad E, of a book on the law of sale, and with Wainwright Professor Emerita Madeleine Cantin Cumyn, of a treatise on the administration of the property of another. She has published articles in the civil law on standard form contracts, crowdfunding, public order, contractual associations, solidary obligations, suretyship and assignment.

Founded in 1975 by the late Professor Paul-André Crépeau, the Paul-André Crépeau Centre for Private and Comparative Law endeavours to promote the civilian tradition in Canada and develop it through a philosophy of openness to the lessons to be learned from other legal traditions. It brings together legal scholars and academics from Quebec and abroad with a view to renewing the theoretical investigations of Quebec’s fundamental private law institutions.

“Since joining the Faculty of Law last year, Professor Cumyn has been an engaged and dedicated member of the Crépeau Centre,” said Dean Robert Leckey, Ad E. “I was delighted when Professor Antaki and she proposed partnering as co-directors, and I look forward to their fruitful collaboration.”
