Two Family Medicine faculty members named to the Faculty Honour List
Drs. Fanny Hersson-Edery and Isabelle Vedel have both been named to the 2019 Faculty of Medicine Faculty Honour List for Educational Excellence. The Faculty Honour List for Educational Excellence recognizes outstanding contributions to education in Â鶹AV’s Faculty of Medicine, in the areas of teaching, educational leadership and innovation, faculty development, and research and scholarly activity.
Dr. Hersson-Edery practices family medicine at the Maison Bleue, a not-for-profit organization affiliated with the CLSC CĂ´te-des-Neiges, which helps marginalized pregnant women and their families. She also supervises residents at the Herzl Family Practice Centre. A member of the Family Medicine Obstetrics Group at the Jewish General Hospital, Dr. Hersson-Edery is the Director of the Enhanced Skills Program within the Department of Family Medicine at Â鶹AV.
Her contribution to medical education has been highlighted on various occasions, notably by the Collège Québécois des médecins de famille, who awarded her the Prix d’excellence – Contribution à l’enseignement de la médecine de famille in 2018 for developing a curriculum for residents in the home care program and a specific six-month maternal and child health program.
“I love being part of our innovative team,” says Dr. Hersson-Edery. “I hope to continue to bring enthusiasm and creativity to our collective endeavour of training the best physicians possible.”
Dr. Isabelle Vedel is a public health physician and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine, as well as an investigator at the Lady Davis Institute at the Jewish General Hospital.
A Dawson scholar, Dr. Vedel’s research in health care organization and primary health care services for people with multiple chronic diseases and older patients has been widely applauded by her peers. Most recently, her research project, “COGNISANCE: Co-designing dementia diagnosis and post-diagnostic care,”, was selected by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Public Health Agency of Canada as part of the European Union Joint Programme – Neurodegenerative Disease Research, the largest global research initiative aimed at tackling challenges related to neurodegenerative diseases.
Dr. Vedel remains highly involved in the Graduate Studies division, where she teaches to graduate students in Family Medicine. She has expertise in evaluation, mixed methods research and complex systematic reviews of medical literature.
“Beyond the development of courses and the use of innovative teaching methods in our graduate programs, I strongly believe in a student-centered education approach – an approach that is, above all, a respectful human relationship,” she explains. “It takes into account individual student abilities and competences, and addresses distinct learning needs, preferences, interests, aspirations, or specific cultural backgrounds.”
Congratulations to Drs. Hersson-Edery and Vedel!
