The Neuro Film Series
The Neuro Film Series season finale will take place on Thursday,
May 24 at 6:30 pm. Iris is a 2001 biographical film that
tells the story of British novelist Iris Murdoch and her
relationship with John Bayley. The film starkly shows the contrast
between the start of their relationship, when Murdoch was an
outgoing, dominant individual as compared to her timid and
scholarly partner Bayley, to their later life, when Iris begins
experiencing forgetfulness and dementia and is in fact suffering
from Alzheimer's disease. Her devoted husband struggles with
hopelessness and frustration to become her caretaker, as his wife's
mind deteriorates from the ravages of Alzheimer's disease. Our
Neuro host, Dr. Edith Hamel will discuss the film and current
Alzheimer research and treatment.
Dr. Edith Hamel is a neuroscientist at the Montreal Neurological
Institute of Â鶹AV. Edith Hamel is
internationally renowned for her innovative work in neuroscience
which focuses on the regulation of cerebral circulation. The goal
of Dr. Hamel’s work is to understand how nerve cells control
regional blood flow in the brain and how this relationship is
altered in pathological states like Alzheimer's disease and
migraine headache. Through understanding of the mechanisms
involved, her research could help in the development of new drugs
aimed at preserving a normal blood supply to the brain or
decreasing vascular head pain.
