The Faculty mourns the passing of the Honourable Michel Proulx

Published: 15 February 2007

The Honourable Michel Proulx was a shrewd judge, a great lawyer and a learned professor of law, and he devoted his life to the improvement of the criminal justice system and to the advancement of human rights in Canada. It was with great sadness that the members of this Faculty learned of his passing on January 14, 2007.

After brilliant studies at the Faculty of Law of the Université de Montréal, Michel Proulx was called to Quebec Bar in 1963, and he quickly acquired the reputation of being one of the finest criminal lawyers in Canada. In 1989, Justice Proulx was appointed to the Court of Appeal of Québec, where for fifteen years he made important decisions on the Charter and on the fundamental rights of the criminally accused. A brilliant attorney, he also acted as counsel before the Cliche Commission, the Malouf Commission, the Keable Commission and the MacDonald Commission on the R.C.M.P. His achievements include a criminal and penal case management service that improved the court system and made it more efficient.

The Honourable Michel Proulx was also the author of works on criminal law and ethics, subjects on which he gave many conferences as well. In 2006, he was awarded the Prix de la Justice du Québec, in acknowledgement of his devotion to the improvement and promotion of justice in Quebec.

Beyond his career as a practitioner, Justice Proulx also taught Criminal Procedure and Evidence in Criminal Matters for over twenty years as an adjunct professor here at the Faculty of Law of Â鶹AV. He also acted as a volunteer at the Faculty, supporting its international human rights conference programs.
