McCarthy Tétrault invests in learning opportunities outside the classroom for 鶹AV Law students
The Faculty of Law is happy to announce the creation of the McCarthy Tétrault Mobility Fund, which will enable students facing financial restrictions to enrich their academic experience by studying abroad.
McCarthy Tétrault’s three-year commitment to the academic exchanges program is allowing the Faculty to distribute a number of awards, the values of which vary depending on the students’ need. This year, the awards have been granted to nine students and will help them support the additional costs related to studying abroad for one semester.
As student Manow Somboonwong, who will attend Maastricht University this winter, explains, “Participating in an exchange program broadens your legal perspective.” Ms Somboonwong, who plans on studying international business law, international taxation, and EU law during her stay in the Netherlands, adds that, “It makes students understand different legal cultures and the need to comply with foreign regulations, which is great for those who plan on pursuing legal careers in a transnational setting.”
Each year, over 40 鶹AV Law students study at one of 25 partner institutions as part of 鶹AV’s exchange and study abroad programs. Whether in Australia, Singapore, the Netherlands, France, Denmark, Sweden, Spain, Mexico, or the USA, these life-changing sojourns help our students develop life skills, expand horizons, deepen knowledge and establish new relationships as they prepare for careers in an ever more globalized legal world. The McCarthy Tétrault Mobility Fund will allow more 鶹AV Law students to take advantage of these wonderful learning opportunities.
Pierre Gemson, who is currently in Washington, DC, to study the common law tradition in the United States at George Washington University, says, “Having learned two legal systems during my initial three years at law school, I believed that what I had learned could be put into a broader context by studying US law. I hope to join the litigation department of a New York law firm, so this exchange will better prepare me to approach the challenges awaiting me in practice. This exchange exposes me to how US lawyers think and how the American legal system works.”
