Published: 27 November 2014

Prof. McAdams, the Canada Research Chair in Music Perception and Cognition at the Schulich School of Music, delivered the 2014 William Poland Lecture in Music Theory at Ohio State University's School of Music. The Poland lectures are an endowed series that presents cutting-edge perspectives on music theory. Prof. McAdams presented the work from a research project on Orchestration and Perception supported by the Quebec Society and Culture funding agency (FRQSC). The talk, entitled "Toward a psychological foundation for a theory of orchestration," was the first presentation of analyses of 50 pieces of music targeting orchestral effects related to principles of perceptual grouping. The analyses were conducted by a team of graduate students at the Schulich School of Music in composition, music theory, musicology and music education under the supervision of Prof. McAdams and PhD candidate Meghan Goodchild.
