Jazz festivals don't only happen in the summer, and our faculty, students, and alumni are still keeping busy with appearances at different events in the fall. Two such upcoming festivals, the and , feature a significant number of Schulich-related artists as group leaders or bandmembers, which we've compiled in two lists below.

Students at the Schulich School of Music can apply for an internship with , where they'll get the chance to work with CBC Montreal's music team on broadcast recording projects, online editorial pieces and more for optional credit. Congratulations to cellist Elie Boissinot (B.Mus 2020), who was recently awarded a  valued at $10,000! Open to post-secondary students across Canada in their penultimate or final year, the grants were established to "foster excellence in new talent." About this success, Elie said "It is a great privilege and honour to be selected to receive such a prestigious grant!

Congratulations to several of our professors who recently received Insight Grants to fund a wide variety of fascinating research projects!

According to the SSHRC, the Insight program was established with the goal to “support and foster excellence in social sciences and humanities research intended to deepen, widen and increase our collective understanding of individuals and societies, as well as to inform the search for solutions to societal challenges.â€

Congratulations to violinist Amy Hillis (B.Mus 2012, current D.Mus) and bassoonist Kristy Tucker (M.Mus 2017), who were featured in CBC Music's annual "30 hot Canadian classical musicians under 30" roundup. The list highlights some of the most promising young musicians from across Canada, acting as an annual shortlist of the country's brightest new talents in classical music.

We are very excited to launch our 2018-2019 season, with several brand new additions to the program as well as the usual favourites. Over 600 performances by members of Schulich’s vibrant musical community are on offer, presentations by our world-class researchers as well as visiting guests, masterclasses by international guest artists, a new concert series, and a new composition competition to add to our long-established list of student competitions.

Jam sessions have long been a cornerstone of jazz communities in cities around the world. In addition to offering playing and networking opportunities for the participants, they also act as a chance for anyone who shows up to celebrate the music they love.

In Montreal, there were three main jams for many years – Monday’s session at Upstairs Jazz Bar & Grill, Diese Onze on Tuesday nights, and Grumpy’s Bar on Wednesdays. These events mostly took place around downtown Montreal, so there was an opportunity for a jam to open up in another of the city’s neighbourhoods.

The Schulich School of Music is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Dr. Barbara Whitley, a long-time friend and supporter of the School. Dr, Whitley received her BA from Â鶹AV in 1940 and an Honorary Doctorate in Arts in 1992, and was an accomplished actor, philanthropist and volunteer. She had just celebrated her 100th birthday this past April.

On May 20, 2018, Schulich students had a rare chance to get direct feedback from a singing legend – Nana Mouskouri. 

Ryan Nauta (tenor), Jonah Spungin (baritone), Jessica Burnside (soprano) and Elie Manousakis (soprano) performed as part of in a masterclass in Tanna Schulich Hall where Mouskouri (DLitt 2013) offered guidance based on a wealth of experience from her 60-year career.

Earlier this year, cellist and Schulich professor Matt Haimovitz was appointed as the first-ever John Cage Fellow at the New School's . As part of this artist-in-residence program, Haimovitz will be actively involved in Mannes activities, including acting as an ensemble coach, teaching private lessons, and engaging in joint endeavors with Schulich.

Congratulations to Amy Hillis (D.Mus 2019), who won the 41st this past weekend for her stunning final-round performance with collaborative pianist . As the first-prize winner, Hillis received an award totalling $15,000, including a $8000 cash prize, a residency and recital at Italy's this summer and a multi-city Canadian tour in the fall.

In January of this year, Greg Burlet (MA 2013) launched , a mobile app that makes music transcription easier than ever. Using artificial intelligence, the app analyzes audio played from guitar, voice, brass or woodwinds and turns it into sheet music. Adopted by thousands of users since launch, the app is available on the iTunes app store and Google Play in a free or subscription-based model.

Prof. Richard Stoelzel, Professor of Trumpet and Brass Area Chair at the Schulich School of Music, recently released his latest record – Horizon. This newest release features many works for trumpet and orchestra that Stoelzel commissioned specifically for the release, and sees him joined by the Polish Camerata Chamber Orchestra. In light of this exciting new disc, we spoke to Prof. Stoelzel about the album, performing as a soloist and more in a recent email exchange.
