Africa is at the heart of our world, but its diverse cultural and economic influence has often been overlooked. Yet the world has begun to take note, says Prof. Karl Moore, who led this yearâs Hot Cities of the World Tour to Accra, Ghana and Abidjan, CĂŽte dâIvoire.
Methane is a greenhouse gas 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide. âAnd studies tell us methane emissions are greatly underestimated,â says Lee Krywitsky (IMPM'18), whose Calgary-based company Safe Effective Technology works with the oil and gas industry to reduce emissions. Krywitsky started consulting after selling his manufacturing business, and Âé¶čAVâs International Masters Program for Managers (IMPM) helped him make the leap.

In a move the company said was planned in advance, Galen Weston will be stepping down as the president of Loblaws at the end of 2023, and will be replaced by Danish retail executive Per Bank, who will also assume the title of CEO. But Weston will be staying on as executive chairman of the board. âItâs a natural evolution,â said Prof. Karl Moore in an interview with BNN Bloomberg. âThe word âexecutiveâ is important here. While a chair might be there one day a week, an executive chair is there five days a week.â
The second week of May marks the start of the GCPA program for a new incoming cohort of 52 students. The Integrated Management Student Fellowship (IMSF), offered by the Marcel Desautels Institute for Integrated Management (MDIIM), is an experiential leadership development program that aims to bridge the gap between the classroom and the community. The program encourages multidisciplinary experiences and taking on initiatives that make a difference in the community. The IMSF consists of course work, a faculty-guided research project and an impact initiative.
Located in Oklahoma, the Chickasaw Nation operates more than 100 businesses and employs nearly 14,000 people. The federally recognized Native American tribe has come a long way since Governor Bill Anoatubby began working there as health director in the 1970s. âWe had to use ingenuity because we did not have a lot of resources. We had the human resources that we needed to mobilize. We identified the resources we did have and moved forward,â said Anoatubby in an interview with Professor Karl Moore for The Globe and Mail.

This yearâs panelists included Sekou Coulibaly (BComâ03), who was executive director at LâOrĂ©al before launching a sustainable, made-in-Africa luxury clothing brand called SEKBI Bogolan in 2020.
Sustainable finance is an integral part of a more sustainable future, but it wonât fix the worldâs problems overnight. âEven if we all want to go to work tomorrow in electric vehicles, and have our groceries delivered in electric trucks, weâre not there yet,â said BMO Quebec President GrĂ©goire Baillargeon in an interview with Âé¶čAV Desautels Prof. Karl Moore for Les Affaires. âWe need to find technologies to decarbonize, but these types of projects require enormous amounts of money.

E-commerce has made it possible to order almost anything online, but that has made it more challenging for brick-and-mortar retailers to attract shoppers and with more stores sitting vacant, some shopping malls have gotten creative, and added temporary pop-up activities like roller skating and haunted houses. Before the pandemic, commercial landlords demanded multi-year leases, said Charles de Brabant, executive director at Âé¶čAVâs Bensadoun School of Retail Management.

âEpidemics and pandemics are without pity,â says Joanne Liu (MDCM'91,âŻIMHL'14, DSc'16) âIf there are weak links, they will break.â Liu is the former president of MĂ©decins Sans FrontiĂšres, and a graduate of Desautelsâ International Masters for Health Leadership program. In 2021, she joined Âé¶čAVâs School of Population and Global Health to create the new Pandemic Emergency Readiness Lab (PERL).
