One in three women die of ischemic heart disease or stroke. Yet most women remain unaware of the risks they face: they are under-diagnosed, under-treated and under-researched.

Our learning objective is to increase awareness and knowledge about heart disease in women amongst healthcare professionals.

This symposium will include presentations by experts on sex and gender differences in heart disease.

HBHL awarded five attendance scholarships for HBHL Fellows to attend theÌý. The School took place from September 9 to 13, 2019 in Montreal. Through presentations and interactive tutorials, participants gained knowledge and skills in convolutional neural networks, language processing, reinforcement learning and more that they can apply to their own research.

Paul Lefebvre, Member of Parliament for Sudbury, on behalf of the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources, today announced an investment of over $1.5 million for a project led by Â鶹AV’s Professor Hani Mitri, Director of Mining Engineering at Â鶹AV, and founder of Â鶹AV Mine Design & Numerical Modelling Laboratory. Professor Mitri’s research project will validate and test a new method for rock breakage, improving mining and tunneling practices, while reducing blast-induced fumes from traditional explosives.

TheÌýcommitteeÌýcontributes to the neuroscience community in Montréal by organizing monthly Trainee Get-Togethers and the annual HBHL Trainee Research Day, both of which allow neuroscience trainees to connect with each other and share their research.

Professor Christoph Brunner of Leuphana University in Germany will be hosted for one year at Â鶹AV as the John G. Diefenbaker Awardee, where he will pursue a specialized research project, engage in teaching, lecturing and leading workshops, and exchange with other Canadian and US research communities.ÌýProf. Brunner’s research revolves around the intersections between media, affect, and aesthetic politics. He focuses on contemporary social movements, and their use of aesthetic techniques and strategies.

Today, Iain Stewart, President of the National Research Council, Canada's largest federal research and development organization, announced the results of the inaugural round of the NRC’s New Beginnings Initiative. The New Beginnings Initiative is part of the NRC’s Ideation Fund, which was announced in Budget 2018 to encourage, test and validate transformative research ideas generated by NRC researchers working with external collaborators.

Martha Crago, Vice-Principal, Research and Innovation (VP-RI), is pleased to announce the appointment of Jean Saint-Vil to the role of Special Advisor, Strategic Projects, to the VP-RI.

Mr. Saint-Vil joins Â鶹AV from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) where he has served in several positions with increasing responsibility for 27 years, most recently as Associate Vice-President in charge of the Networks of Centres of Excellence (NCE) Secretariat in Ottawa. His appointment at Â鶹AV commences on March 11, 2019.
