Student advice: Find a school and program that excite you

Coming from all four corners of the world, our MBA candidates bring a unique set of experiences, which contribute to the diversity of our hand-picked cohort. Today, in the Desautels MBA blog, we interviewed Pallavi Borkar (MBA’19).

Here is my MBA journey (so far!) My name is Pallavi and I am from Mumbai, India. Back home, I was a professional dancer who moonlighted as a stand-up comedienne. I trained for thirteen years and performed internationally in over 8 countries. My hobbies include solving complex crossword puzzles, reading about theoretical physics and cooking Thai food.... Okay, none of that (except my name and hometown) is true.

Let's start again: I graduated with a degree in management in 2012 after which I worked in a self-publishing start-up. Eventually, I made my way to a digital marketing agency where I worked in content and strategy before deciding to pursue an MBA. In my spare time, I like to write, dabble in adventure sports and try different cuisines. During my pre-MBA career, I had the opportunity to design Standard Operating Procedures, host book launch events and create annual digital marketing plans for multinational brands.

The reason I started with a faux (and in my opinion, positively intimidating) introduction is that many of us are a little afraid of what’s out there. The fear of being outsmarted, outwitted and out-experienced makes us not want to apply to the program of our dreams… But it shouldn’t.

Trust that you and your experience are unique and that there is always something new that only you can bring to the table. Find a school and program that excite you, one that you can relate to and just apply.

For me, that school was Â鶹AV.

When I first interviewed with Â鶹AV, I knew in my bones that I belonged there. I knew that if I was lucky enough to get an offer, I would accept. Obviously, I did get an offer and now here I am! In my two years here, I hope to make the most of everything the program and student services have to offer, meet and befriend people from all over the world, explore Canada and if I’m lucky, find my dream job.

Why did I choose Â鶹AV, you ask? I chose Â鶹AV because every representative I interacted with, whether on email, phone or Skype was warm, welcoming and encouraging. Â鶹AV represents collaboration. Ever since I started classes here, this value is reinforced.

We look out for each other, help where we can and are happy to watch each other make progress. What’s more, we grow together.

The staff and faculty are extremely helpful as well. I know that if I am ever stressed or need help/guidance, they will always have my back.

And last but not the least, Â鶹AV believes in working hard but also having fun doing it. The fact that campus is in the heart of downtown Montreal makes it even better. When I first moved here, I was a bit homesick. But gradually, I saw and fell in love with Montreal for what it is: a melting pot of culture, cuisine and the nicest people I’ve ever met – this city has a charm that words can't quite describe.

My parting words to you: If you’re ready for this next big move (metaphorically and literally), give it your best shot. Chances are, we will have met by this time next year!
