Leveraging AI for Biodiversity, with Professor Juan Serpa
Discover how researchers and individuals can leverage artificial intelligence to support biodiversity in an exciting virtual discussion featuring Prof. Juan Serpa alongside Mariapaz Pajares Burns and Nikki Tye, alumni of Â鶹AV Desautels' Costa Rica Study Trip.
In this talk, Prof. Serpa will discuss two related initiatives in his work on AI and biodiversity.
The first initiative is the Data Mangrove, a sustainability data hub that partners researchers with NGOs in Latin America. Prof. Serpa will explain how AI is being used to build monkey bridges in Costa Rica, protect the Amazon rainforest from illegal activities in collaboration with Indigenous communities, clean beaches from microplastics, improve composting, and help microfarmers identify pests more efficiently.
Prof. Serpa will also talk about the Sustainability Academic Network (SUSAN), an upcoming social network that he hopes to turn into the LinkedIn/ResearchGate of sustainability. This social network will unite climate researchers worldwide, allowing them to share data through an open data platform, promote research papers, and explore funding and job opportunities in sustainability. This hub enables data-driven collaboration across sustainability disciplines. This session will introduce the hub’s features and invite researchers to join this academic network before its late-summer launch.

About the Costa Rica Study Trip
The Costa Rica Experiential Learning Course gives students in either of these fields an immersive, hands-on experience where they can work directly on one of twelve projects in collaboration with multiple NGOs and natural reserves.
Students earn credits from Â鶹AV by developing experiential projects that focus on sustainability and analytics, all while living on a natural reserve located steps away from Playa Conchal.
