Jobs and youth: is the degree still the best start?

On a recent Breakfast Television youth employment panel, Desautels Assistant Professor said that, though itā€™s not necessarily an employment guarantee, ā€œon average, itā€™s very clear that the university degree is the smarter, the better way to go.ā€ But even so, the world has changed, and a degree by itself just isnā€™t enough. First, thereā€™s the perennial chicken-and-egg issue, where it takes a job to get the experience required to get a job. And millennials see a career happening in two-year chunks, whereas employers still havenā€™t adopted that mindset.

The upshot? Get the degree, but having a plan, taking advantage of internships and finding mentors will all help ensure success.
