Leadership, management and a false dichotomy

In a letter to Malaysia’s The Star Online, management consultant Dr Ranjit Singh Malhi takes issue with the widely-held distinction between managers and leaders. Though many theorists draw a line between effectiveness (the bailiwick of leaders) and efficiency (a manager’s wheelhouse), Dr. Malhi points to work by Desautels Professor Henry Mintzberg, who positions a manager in a broader leadership role that embraces behavioural and non-behavioural issues, as opposed to the narrower spectrum that leadership generally covers. Further, Dr. Malhi states that “A high-performance manager is almost always a good leader. On the other hand, an effective leader is not necessarily a high-performance managerâ€
