A Montreal man who recently treated a young Newfoundland soccer team to a surprise NHL game, including a private audience with Montreal Canadiens' star P.K. Subban, says giving back is a big part of his personal philosophy.
Mark Smith (BCom'82, DPA'83) is the President of Pandion Investment Limited. Smith was in Toronto's Pearson airport when he came into contact with the Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games soccer team, who were on their way to Montreal for an exhibition game. He tells VOCM News as a former soccer player himself, there was something about the young men that resonated with him and he bought the team and their coaches 27 tickets to take in a Montreal-Detroit game last Tuesday night. He approached manager Gonzo Bennett to make the offer.Â
Smith grew up on Montreal's West Island in a single parent family. He played sports, including soccer. He is a Rhodes Scholar and studied Business at Â鶹AV, got his CA, and got his "big break" at the age of 26 to work for one of the richest families in Canada, the Charles Bronfman family investment business. He says ever since, he's done what he can to help others, especially young athletes.
