Abstract
The following research project is a scoping review. The goal was to screen the literature concerning homelessness prevention following release from prison. The Quebec-Homelessness Prevention Policy Collaborative (Q-HPPC) identified the population being released from prison as particularly at risk of homelessness. The guiding question for the research project was, 鈥淲hat do we know about programs or policies which exist to prevent homelessness for people leaving incarceration?鈥�. Over 1300 articles were screened from 5 databases, using two independent reviewers and the supervisor of the Q-HPPC as the tiebreaker. Starting from 1078 articles, the working group identified 14 highly relevant articles concerning interventions specifically designed for people leaving incarceration helping them avoid homelessness. Additionally, articles were also screened for risk of bias and a quality assessment was done for the qualitative papers. The highly relevant articles placed a focus on housing, supportive resources, and prevention of homelessness for prison releasees. Early linkage with prisoners in prison, pre-release planning, and features of Critical Time Intervention (CTI) programs were the most relevant factors contributing to successful prison release programs to prevent homelessness. The Q-HPPC continues to meet regularly to attempt to extend an existing intervention at the Bordeaux prison in Montreal using some of the findings from this review.聽
