Integral hydrogeochemical study of the Araró-Simirao geothermal system, Michoacán, Central Mexico

Résumé / abstract:

In order to develop a conceptual model of fluid transport in a geothermal system, it is essential to gain an understanding of the hydrogeochemistry of the water and gases that are interacting within the system. Integration of hydrogeochemical evaluation with other geothermal exploration techniques facilitates the creation of conceptual fluid transport models. In this study, the results of chemical and isotopic analyses of water and gases within the Araró-Simirao geothermal system, which is located within the Cuitzeo Lake tectonic basin in the central portion of the Transmexican Volcanic Belt (CTM), provide evidence on the transport of fluids. The results indicate that zones of higher permeability, such as normal faults, play a significant role in the mobility of fluids. Additionally, the interaction of fluids with the shallow aquifer in the area was observed.
