Interdisciplinary geoscientific insights from boreholes, sediments, and pore waters of the western Champlain Sea

Résumé / abstract:

Glaciomarine Champlain Sea (CS) sediments form a regional aquitard in the Ottawa valley and St. Lawrence lowlands with potential for landslide development. This presentation will summarize results and insights from Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) and partner investigations of CS sediments in the Ottawa valley. In 2019, the GSC obtained near-continuous cores from deep boreholes drilled at two sites in suburban Ottawa (49 and 66 m depths). Studies of the boreholes, core sediments and pore waters include a range of interdisciplinary geoscientific methods, namely, pore water geochemistry and isotopes, exchangeable cation chemistry, bulk sediment geochemistry, physical and geotechnical properties, borehole geophysics, mineral magnetism, CT (computed tomography) scans, optical microscopy, SEM (scanning electron microscopy), EDS (energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy), XRD (X-ray diffraction), hydraulic head, pollen counts, and microfossil enumerations and their isotopic compositions.
