Dr. Guylène Thériault appointed Assistant Dean, Distributed Medical Education
We are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Guylène ThĂ©riault to the position of Assistant Dean, Distributed Medical Education, Department of Family Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Â鶹AV. Dr. ThĂ©riault replaces Dr. Helene Rousseau, who served as Assistant Dean, Rural Education, since 2011. We take this opportunity to thank Dr. Rousseau for her commitment and enthusiasm over the last five years, during which she travelled across the RUIS Â鶹AV territory, which spans 63 per cent of Quebec’s land mass, in support of our health partners in the regions. We wish Dr. Rousseau the very best and continued success in her ongoing academic and clinical pursuits.
In the role of Assistant Dean, Distributed Medical Education, Dr. ThĂ©riault will oversee the training of students and residents in clinical teaching sites, with a focus on rural and remote sites. She brings with her a broad-based knowledge in community health, experience in clinical teaching and expertise in regional health care delivery. Reporting directly to the Associate Deans of Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME) and Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME), Dr. ThĂ©riault will ensure the fulfillment of the distributed medical education mission at Â鶹AV. This includes liaising with key stakeholders, such as the departments concerned with the core medical specialties; the Assistant Dean, Medical Education, Â鶹AV-Outaouais region; and the PGME and UGME offices.
Dr. ThĂ©riault will also supervise the operation of clinical training sites by working closely with the Â鶹AV’s RUIS network, promoting educational and career options to trainees, and managing the Financing Program for Medical Teaching in a Clinical Setting offered by Quebec’s Ministry of Health and Social Services. She will network with the medical faculties of other Quebec and Canadian universities to keep abreast of current training approaches and opportunities for improvement.
A medical graduate of UniversitĂ© de MontrĂ©al, Dr. ThĂ©riault completed a family medicine residency at Â鶹AV in 1996. In 2013, she earned a diploma in Evidence-based Health Care from Oxford University. She is an advisory committee member for the academic mission of the CISSS Outaouais, where she has also served as Medical Officer of Public Health for the last 15 years. A former acting director of Professional Services for the Health and Social Services Centre in Gatineau and the CISSS Outaouais, Dr. ThĂ©riault recently joined the Board of Directors of the Quebec Medical Association.
An advocate for preventing overdiagnosis and over-medicalization in medical practice, Dr. Thériault speaks extensively on the topic across Quebec, and is a member of the clinical leaders group of Choosing Wisely Canada. She has also contributed to the new version of the workshop “Practising Wisely,” which will soon be offered across Canada by the Ontario College of Family Physicians. She has been a practicing family physician for the past two decades and has lent her expertise to clinical teaching in evidence-based medicine in the Outaouais region.
Please join us in warmly welcoming Dr. ThĂ©riault to this new position and in wishing her success in guiding Â鶹AV’s medical education training sites within all its clinical settings in Quebec.
