Indonesian Delegation Visits IASL

On Thursday March 16th, a delegation from Indonesia consisting of His Excellency Mr. Daniel T.S. Simanjuntak, Indonesian Ambassador to Canada and Permanent Representative to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Mr. Denon Prawiraatmadja, Chairman of the Indonesian National Air Carriers Association, Mr. Andre Rahadian, Partner at Dentons, as well as selected embassy employees, visited the 鶹AV Institute of Air and Space Law, where they were met on behalf of Interim Director, Prof. Donal Hanley, by Executive Director, Stefan-Michael Wedenig, Editor of the Annals of Air and Space Law, Jack Wright Nelson, and Senior Administrative Assistant, Maria D’Amico.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed a range of issues related to air and space law, including regulatory frameworks, safety and security standards, and international cooperation. They explored possible areas of collaboration, such as joint research projects and the exchange of expertise and knowledge.

The Indonesian delegation praised the reputation of the Institute and expressed their appreciation for the warm welcome and hospitality extended to them. They commended the Institute for its contribution to the development of air and space law and its collaboration with international organizations such as ICAO and the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA).

The delegation emphasised the importance of strengthening Indonesia's legal framework for aviation and space and expressed interest in deepening their cooperation with the Institute, exploring potential areas of collaboration such as joint research projects, academic exchanges, and capacity building activities to enhance the legal framework for air and space activities in Indonesia.

The Institute, in turn, expressed its readiness to assist Indonesia in these areas and highlighted its focus on promoting sustainable development in air and space law.

The meeting concluded with a commitment to further dialog and an invitation by the Indonesian delegation to the Institute, readily accepted, to visit Indonesia in June in conjunction with the upcoming Conference on International Aviation & Space Financing Law: Challenges, Changes, Innovations being jointly organized for Friday June 9th by the Institute with the Centre for Banking and Finance Law of the National University of Singapore at which Prof. Maria Chiara Malaguti, President of the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law, has graciously agreed to give the keynote address.

“The Institute frequently welcomes Indonesian students to our graduate programme, and we deeply value our relationship with Indonesia. I recall with pleasure prior visits to Jakarta to deal with Indonesian government officials and air carriers and was struck by their professionalism, warmth and courtesy on each occasion” Interim Director, Prof. Donal Hanley said, adding “I look forward to continuing the dialog during our conference in Singapore and our trip to Indonesia as part of our continued commitment to Asia”.
