This year’s Annual MSSI Research Symposium brought together a diverse and international audience centred on the central theme of Knowledge Action. Our keynote speaker was David Phipps MBA, Ph.D., the assistant vice-president, Research Strategy & Impact, Office of the Vice-President Research & Innovation at York University and Director of Research Impact Canada (RIC). He joined us to discuss the benefits and barriers to expanding the reach and impact of research beyond academia.
Our research theme co-leads Profs. Catherine Potvin and David Wachsmuth participated in the event, highlighting their experiences collaborating with governments and private industry on their previous research projects.

On Day 2 of the Symposium, we featured the soft launch of the Sus Dashboard by the Urban Landscapes research theme co-leads Profs. Andy Gonzalez, Kevin Manaugh, and David Wachsmuth. This new tool, developed to support data-driven decision making for the monitoring, planning and governance of urban sustainability in Montreal, will have a full launch to the general public in the new year.
We wrapped the two-day event with presentations and trivia for the MSSI graduate students and postdoc community. They presented their research in two-minute videos and interacted with other cohort members from different departments and disciplines. The cohort is involved in innovative research across the university and worldwide, from foodsheds to sustainable architecture to walkability. More on their inspiring and fascinating work to come in 2022.
