Tropical Forests and Climate Change: How research can help transform a problem into a solution - Frances Seymour

Frances Seymour, Distinguished Senior Fellow at World Resources Institute, delivered a talk on her work in the area of tropical forests and climate change. She presented important consequences of tropical deforestation, such as significant release of greenhouse gas emissions and reduction of the ecosystem services that are crucial for ecosystem health and rural livelihoods, as well as the potential of forests in climate mitigation. She highlighted how trade, consumption patterns and policy in developed countries drive tropical deforestation and can be leveraged to help reduce deforestation as part of a global climate solution. Frances Seymour conducts research and writing on forest and governance issues and advises major initiatives – including , the , the and the . Seymour joined WRI from the Center for Global Development, where she was a Senior Fellow. She also served as Director General of the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) from 2006 to 2012. Prior to that, Frances was the founding director of the Institutions and Governance Program (now the Governance Center) at WRI. Seymour also continues to serve as Senior Adviser to the David and Lucile Packard Foundation. She has been awarded France’s Order of Agricultural Merit. She is the lead author of the book, . She holds an MPA in Development Studies from Princeton University and a BS in Zoology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
