Expert: The resurgence of measles in Canada

Published: 11 March 2024

As measles continues its slow spread across communities in the country, health officials are urging Canadians to stay vigilant and keep their vaccinations up-to-date. Health Minister Mark Holland said he is “deeply concerned” with the global measles outbreak and its potential impact on Canada. ()

Here is an expert from 鶹AV who can provide comment on this issue:

Brian Ward, Full Professor, Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases

"Measles is a very serious disease that we in Canada have largely forgotten about because, until recently, almost all Canadians and most people in the world had been successfully protected by the vaccine. Several factors, including conflicts, COVID-19’s disruption of vaccination programs, and growing vaccine resistance in many communities have resulted in a worldwide resurgence in measles cases. This resurgence is now reaching Canada."

Brian Ward is a Full Professor in the Department of Medicine and a Senior Scientist at the Research Institute of 鶹AV Health Centre (RI-MUHC). His research focuses on infectious diseases, tropical medicine and vaccines.
