Physiology Seminar by Dr. Allen J. Ehrlicher: " Under pressure: compression-mediated nuclear mechanotransduction"

Friday, March 17, 2023 11:00to12:00
McIntyre Medical Building Room 1034, 3655 promenade Sir William Osler, Montreal, QC, H3G 1Y6, CA

ABSTRACT:

Mechanotransduction, the conversion of mechanical stimuli into biochemical signals, is facilitated by numerous macromolecules, ion channels, and protein complexes within the cell. The nucleus itself also serves as a mechanosensor, integrating cytoskeletal and external stresses. In my research, we have found that nuclear strain mechanosensing appears to be a master control parameter for the regulation of Yes Associated Protein (YAP). In this talk, I will describe the biophysical regulation of YAP activity due to nuclear compression, how this is modulated by the structural protein Lamin A/C, and discuss some of the far-reaching applications from stem cell differentiation, to cancer and cellular aging.
