Topic: Comity, Commerce, and Cold War: Mormons, the Philippines, and the Challenges of Globalization

Speaker: Laurie Maffly-Kipp

Archer Alexander Distinguished Professor at the John C. Danforth Center on Religion and Politics, Washington University in St. Louis

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints began its missionary activity in the Philippines in the 1890s, just as Utah began its concerted assimilation into American Society. Today, fully two-thirds of Church members in Asia are in the Philippines. In an important sense, the LDS Church and the Philippines became ā€œAmericanizedā€ together. This talk will explore the interconnections between these movements, and suggest how Mormon ā€œAmericanizationā€ in this Asian outpost depended on Filipino/a ā€œAmericanization.ā€ What challenges does this study of the Philippines tell us about the internationalization of the LDS Church?
