The Office of the Vice-President (Research and Innovation), Internal Research Funds provide support to full-time academic staff in pursuit of their research programs and projects.
The following competitive programs are available to researchers. Eligibility varies by program.
Paper Presentation Grants
General information: The Paper Presentation Grant Program allocates SSHRC funds to 鶹AV faculty members for travel expenses incurred in the presentation of research communications at academic conferences.

Deadlines: March 15, 2024, June 1, 2024, September 15, 2024, December 15, 2024 and March 15, 2025. If the deadline falls on a weekend or public holiday, the next working day applies.

Sabbatical Leave Research Grants
General information: The purpose of an internal Sabbatical Leave Research Grant is to enable eligible sabbaticants to apply to take part of their salary as a research grant. 鶹AV gives sabbaticants the opportunity to take advantage of income tax regulations which allow the University, under certain conditions, to award a research grant from funds that normally would have been paid as salary to that faculty member while on leave.
Deadline: Two months prior to sabbatical research leave. Average award: No more than 50% of applicant's salary. The form must be completed and forwarded to the Chair, Dean and Budget Administrator of your department for approval. The Office of Sponsored Research will then verify and forward the approval to the Human Resources Payroll Specialist Services for processing. The Human Resources Payroll Specialist Services will process a direct deposit into the applicant's bank account for the full amount of the first budget year and a subsequent direct deposit at the start of the second budget year. It will require no special action by the Department or the grantee.

Social Sciences and Humanities Development Grants Program
General information: The Social Sciences and Humanities Development Grants Program allocates SSHRC funds to selected members of 鶹AV’s full-time academic staff. In accordance with SSHRC’s mandate, the proposed research project must be primarily in the social sciences or humanities, and the intended outcome of the research must primarily be to add to our understanding and knowledge of individuals, groups and societies.
The purpose of the Development Grant is to provide seed funding for the following types of specific support to Faculty members: Short-term support for early-stage research that will enhance the development of proposals to external funding agencies for multi-year research support. Examples of grant programs offering the type of multi-year research support which is intended under the above provision are SSHRC Insight and Insight Development Grants and FRQSC Soutien à la recherche pour la relève professorale and Soutien à la recherche-création pour la relève professorale grants. Support for emerging scholars (as defined by SSHRC) to help launch new research programs.

SSHRC General Research Fund (GRF) and NSERC GRF
General information: SSHRC and NSERC will allow residual funds from prior years to be retained by 鶹AV under certain conditions determined by their Finance and Awards Administration Division. These funds will be transferred to a General Research Fund (GRF). In accordance with Tri-Agency regulations, the university uses these funds for the “broad purpose of enhancing the quality of research in the natural sciences and engineering, or in the social sciences and humanities”. Primary SSHRC and NSERC grant holders, whose grants have expired with funds remaining, may formally apply to 鶹AV’s SSHRC or NSERC General Research Fund (GRF), which is administered by the Office of Sponsored Research, in order to complete the research project originally funded.
