Undergraduate Teaching in Anesthesiology
The undergraduate training program in anesthesiology is under the direction of the Â鶹AV Department of Anesthesia. The main locations of training include the Â鶹AV Health Centre (Royal Victoria Hospital, Montreal General Hospital, Montreal Children's Hospital, and Lachine General Hospital), the Sir Mortimer B. Davis Jewish General Hospital, St-Mary's Hospital, Lakeshore General Hospital and LaSalle General Hospital. The Gatineau campus is based at the CHVO (Centre Hospitalier des Vallées de l'Outaouais).
Undergraduate teaching in divided into the mandatory TCP rotation and the possibility for medical students to undergo an elective in anesthesia.
The aim of the TCP program is to provide all medical students with an introduction to the anesthesia specialty. During their TCP rotation, the students undergo a mandatory two-week rotation in one of the affiliated Â鶹AV Hospitals. They are provided with background in the basic sciences (e.g. cardiopulmonary physiology) and a broad exposure to clinical anesthesiology. The TCP rotation also encompasses a day at the Â鶹AV Simulation Center where students are taught essential practical skills (airway management and intravascular access) and a special day dedicated to pain medicine. The knowledge and skills acquired during TCP anesthesia are essential in becoming an accomplished physician.
The goal of the elective in anesthesia is to provide medical students the possibility to further their knowledge and skills in anesthesia in order to prepare them for residency or to improve their critical care medicine skills. Please note that space for electives is limited and that requests will be honored according to hospital capacity at each site. The rotation needs to be for a minimum of three weeks but ideally four weeks would be preferable.
