Mono-SOS app is helping prevent howler monkey executions in Costa Rica
Published: 28 October 2024
When howler monkeys swing from branch to branch in the canopy of Costa Rica’s forests, they sometimes encounter a deadly hazard: power lines. An app developed by 鶹AV and Associate Professor Juan Camilo Serpa, who spearheads the Costa Rica Experiential Learning Course and Study Trip, is helping identify the hot spots where electrocutions occur. “The Mono-SOS app shows us where these incidents are happening, and where there have been increases or decreases from one year to the next,” says Simona Danielle, Founder of the organization SalveMonos, an NGO that provides medical care to injured monkeys and seeks to prevent these injuries in the first place. “The app gives us all the information that we need to do our work.”
