Dr. Mariam El-Zein is an Epidemiologist and Associate Director for Research in the Division of Cancer Epidemiology (2014-) at Â鶹AV. She directs and oversees data management and analysis of complex longitudinal databases for multiple studies and clinical trials (completed and ongoing) at the Division. She is a member in the Â鶹AV Department of Oncology COVID-19 and Cancer Program (2020-), whose goal is to assess the impact of the pandemic on various aspects of services and activities related to cancer screening and care. Dr. El-Zein is also the Associate Editor for Preventive Medicine (2024-).
Dr. El-Zein holds a bachelor’s degree (B.Sc.) in Environmental Health (1993) and a M.Sc. in Public Health (1995), both from the American University of Beirut, Lebanon. In 2003, she earned a Ph.D. in Occupational Health from Â鶹AV. Dr. El-Zein developed an expertise in leading large-scale research studies, conducting systematic reviews and meta-analyses, and using administrative socio-demographic and medical databases for epidemiological research. Her current interests include cancer epidemiology of human papillomavirus infections and the prevention of cervical cancer, with a special focus on the role of human papillomavirus self-sampling, gene methylation, and the vaginal microbiome in cervical cancer screening.
