Background: ÌýFor many patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), the symptom of breathlessness makes simple daily tasks such as stair climbing extremely difficult and uncomfortable. Indeed, the symptom of breathlessness is a leading cause of physical activity limitation/avoidance in the COPD population, ultimately contributing to cardiovascular deconditioning and worsening of functional capacity, health status and quality of life. It follows that alleviating breathlessness and improving exercise capacity are among the principal goals of COPD management. To that extent, research in our laboratory at Â鶹AV is focused on identifying new/alternative/complimentary therapeutic strategies for the management of breathlessness and activity-limitation in patients with COPD.
Principal investigator:ÌýDennis Jensen, Ph.D.
Procedure:ÌýWilling and eligible participants would be required to visit the Montreal Chest Institute, Â鶹AV Health Center on three to four separate occasions to perform simple lung function tests and an exercise test on a stationary bicycle. ÌýParticipants will be financially compensated for study related expenses.
