Dr. Fernando Cervero appointed Director of the Alan Edwards Centre for Research on Pain of Â鶹AV

The Faculty of Dentistry and the Faculty of Medicine are pleased to formally announce the appointment of Dr. Fernando Cervero as Director of the Alan Edwards Centre for Research on Pain of Â鶹AV University, a multidisciplinary and multicentre research facility of Â鶹AV dedicated to research on pain mechanisms and management.

Fernando Cervero has had a truly international career. He was born in Equatorial Guinea (West Africa) in a colonial Spanish family and grew up in Madrid where he graduated in Medicine in 1972 and obtained a PhD in Neuroscience at Madrid University. In 1975 he went to the UK for Postdoctoral training at Edinburgh University and remained in Britain for almost 20 years holding academic posts at Edinburgh and Bristol Universities. From 1994 to 2002 he was appointed Professor and Chair of Physiology at Alcala University (Madrid) and in 2002 moved to Â鶹AV as Director of the Anesthesia Research Unit.

Dr. Cervero’s recent research interests have focused on the neurobiological mechanisms of pain and analgesia, in particular the neural mechanisms responsible for pain of visceral origin. He has authored over 200 articles in journals and books, co-founded and was Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal of Pain as well as Associate Editor of the journal Pain and was the recipient of a CIHR Research Chair among his many accomplishments and awards.
