Genome Canada has invested nearly $8 million in two Â鶹AV projects as part of a total national investment of $18.1 million in genomics-based research. Through public-private partnerships, these investments will help accelerate the commercialization of genomics and increase its real-world applications.
Thirty students from 10 countries will form the first global cohort of McCall MacBain Scholars at Â鶹AV, arriving in September 2023. Hailing from 26 universities, the new scholars will pursue fully funded master’s or professional degrees in 18 departments and schools across eight Â鶹AV faculties.

Scientists are studying the diets of the oceans’ top predators as they change in response to their environments. This is because how much and what they eat can affect how ecosystems function.
And while researchers know that killer whales, also known as orcas, are the oceans’ apex predators, our understanding of their diet — particularly the quantity of each species they consume — remains incomplete. This is especially true for remote populations that cannot be observed year-round.

Â鶹AV and the UniversitĂ© du QuĂ©bec Ă MontrĂ©al (UQAM) announced today the creation of the Research and Innovation Chair in Animal Welfare and Artificial Intelligence (WELL-E). The five-year, $5 million Chair will carry out a major research project funded by a grant from NSERC Alliance and PROMPT, fiduciary of the Ministry of Economy, Innovation and Energy. The Â鶹AV Pulse Breeding Program and the non-profit organization SeedChange have partnered to bring the ImPulse Project to fruition, an initiative to promote knowledge-sharing, collaboration, and agricultural resilience in the pulse sector.
During the summer of 2022, and thanks to the support of the FRQNT-RQRAD, the ImPulse Project held two field days with actors in Quebec’s pulse sector. The sessions focused on agricultural management, market trends, cultivar evaluation, and the development of pulse varieties adapted to Quebec.

Open to students in any field of study, the aim of the Nexus is to raise awareness about the topic of food security, while also giving its members a place to come together and learn from one another. As its name suggests, the Nexus will work closely with the Margaret A. Gilliam Institute for Global Food Security (IGFS) at Â鶹AV to organize events, educational campaigns, and other activities that support the institute’s work.
Prof. Daiva Nielsen is the recipient of the 2023 New Investigator Award 2023 by the Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes (INMD) and the Canadian Nutrition Society (CNS). The award recognizes demonstrated excellence and outstanding contributions to nutrition-related research and/or improving the nutrition care of patients.
