Welcome Message from the Department Chair
Ìý
Welcome to the Department of Civil Engineering!
The Department (est. 1871) currently has 22 full-time faculty members offering broad programs of study in all areas of civil engineering at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. In addition, an industrial perspective is provided in the classroom by adjunct professors who are practicing civil engineers. The student population consists of approximately 420 undergraduate and 140 graduate students enrolled in our programs, of whom nearly 40% are women and one-third are from outside Canada. Our facilities include state-of-the-art teaching, research and computing laboratories. Our undergraduate and graduate programs are ranked among the top five in Canada.
Civil Engineering graduates use and develop modern technology to meet the needs of our changing society. Concerns for environmental quality, climate change, energy conservation, infrastructure restoration, waste reduction, and public safety now shape the role of civil engineers.
It is an exciting time to be in Civil Engineering at Â鶹AV. What we do has become important and challenging as the world population grows in the face of expanded urbanization, limited resources and changing climatic conditions. We are leading major changes in energy, transportation, water management and treatment, sustainable construction and materials, and adaptation to climate change.
My goal as Department Chair is to help our students to gain the engineering skills, the creativity and the practical knowledge needed to develop innovative solutions. I am committed to supporting student activities, and I will facilitate the engagement of students in a wide range of experiences available in the Faculty, including the Engineering Internship Program (EIP), the Summer Undergraduate Research in Engineering Program (SURE), and the Faculty of Engineering Innovation and Entrepreneurship hub (EngInE). I would like to see students flourishing after graduation as they progress through their careers and turn their potential into the reality of benefitting society. I am honored and excited to lead this outstanding Department.
