Mechanical properties of discontinuous-fibre reinforced polymer matrix composites (DFR PMCs) are strongly influenced by their micro-scale fibre distributions. The objective of my project is to improve existing image analysis techniques for the characterization of fibre distributions based on microscopic images and to develop a machine learning assisted simulation tool that can predict the micro-scale mechanical properties of DFR PMCs based on their micro-scale fibre distributions with high accuracy and efficiency.
