5 Days of Action
is an opportunity for the community to come together in our shared commitment to create a more diverse, inclusive and equitable campus and community. Organized around five “calls to action,” this is a week for us to listen, reflect, dialogue, engage, and take action.ĚýWorking to address systemic forms of racism, sexism, transphobia, homophobia, ableism, and religious intolerance, alongside other forms of oppression, can require vulnerability and difficult conversations. By centering care in all stages of planning and delivery, we strive to create opportunities for all campus community members to be part of Five Days of Action.
Dr. Shaheen Shariff, James Â鶹AV Professor and Director of iMPACTS, is participating in a panel, titled "Artful Action: Art for Addressing and Preventing Sexualized Violence."ĚýThe panel is also part of a participatory art exhibition at UVic’s A. Wilfrid Johns Gallery, entitled playing WITH – playing OUT. With this exhibition, Natasha S. Reid (Assistant Professor, Art Education, Department of Curriculum & Instruction) and Caroline Boileau (Multidisciplinary Artist, Curator, and Art Educator) are exploring how participatory artistic methods can situate a university gallery space as a creative laboratory for engaging with and encouraging consent-based culture. This panel will explore how art and art spaces can be effective sites for addressing and preventing sexualized violence.
In addition to Dr. Shariff, the panel will includeĚýCaroline Boileau, Multidisciplinary Artist, Curator, and Art Educator;ĚýReem Girgrah, Sexualized Violence Prevention and Education Officer, UVic’s Office of Equity and Human Rights;ĚýNiko Mumford, Education Coordinator, UVic’s Anti-Violence Project; andĚýNatasha S. Reid, Assistant Professor, Department of Curriculum & Instruction.Ěý
