Rural and Small Populations Pathway

Access to dental care in rural areas can be difficult for many reasons, including a lack of dentists. To address the chronic shortage of dentists in rural communities, the Faculty of Dental Medicine and Oral Health Sciences has launched the Rural and Small Populations Pathway. The goal of the pathway is to facilitate and increase the representation of Quebec resident applicants to the DMD program who attended a public secondary school in a rural or small population centre in Quebec. Studies have shown that dental medicine students from rural areas are more likely to return to their community after graduation to begin their practice.

Requirements

  • Be recognized as a Quebec resident;

  • Be a university-level applicant (completion of a Bachelor’s degree or higher);

  • Meet all the academic and non-academic requirements for admission to the DMD program;

  • Submit your application and required supporting documents by November 1.

Candidates applying to this pathway must have completed three or more years in a public secondary school in an area in Quebec classified by Statistics Canada as rural (areas outside a large, medium or small population centre that have less than 1,000 residents) or as a small population centre (have a population between 1,000 and 29,999 residents).

Selection Process

Applicants in the Rural and Small Populations Pathway will be assessed against each other as a pool, and they will be simultaneously assessed in the general Quebec residents DMD cohort.

How to apply

Applicants must indicate their interest in being considered for the Rural and Small Populations Pathway in their Academic History Workbook (Excel file) and provide the requested details about their secondary school studies. Eligibility will be reviewed by the Â鶹AV Office during the file review period and, if eligible, they may be asked to upload a copy of their unofficial secondary school transcript. An official transcript will be required if an applicant receives an offer of admission.
