For a work term to be successful, the supervisor and student must establish an effective relationship. The student becomes an employee of the organization and is expected to be treated as any other temporary employee regarding benefits and other employment requirements as defined by the Employment Standards Act or relevant collective agreement(s). As such, the employer assumes responsibility, as they would for any other employee, for the period of the work term. In turn, the student is willing to accept the responsibilities of an employee.

Employer

The following constitutes a suggested list of employer responsibilities within the Workplace Education (Co-op) process. As an employer and co-educator, we encourage that the employer participates in this process with the intention to:

  • Develop accurate and informative job descriptions which reflect the duties and responsibilities of the job to be performed by the student.
  • Provide meaningful employment in the student’s field of study, whereby, the student is engaged in productive learning opportunities and work rather than merely observing.
  • Establish clear learning objectives with the student at the beginning of the work term.
  • Give an orientation to properly acquaint the student to their new location, organization, duties, safety procedures and learning opportunities.
  • Assume the same responsibilities as those associated with hiring any short-term contract employee, including fair remuneration for the work performed.
  • Demonstrate leadership to the student in ensuring that the student’s performance on the job is appropriately supervised and that learning opportunities are available.
  • Supply increasingly more challenging tasks, responsibilities and learning opportunities as student’s progress through the more advanced stages of the program.
  • Monitor and offer feedback on a regular basis as to the student’s progress throughout the work term.
  • Complete the Employer’s Evaluation of the Student’s Performance and forwards it to the Co-op Advisor for the student’s file in a timely manner.
  • Participate in on-site/virtual visits with the Co-op Advisor, during the work term to evaluate the student’s work term performance and learning outcomes.
  • Arrange an exit interview with the student to review their on-the-job performance and learning outcomes and discuss plans for subsequent work term employment.

Student

Workplace Education (Co-op) students are expected to:

  • Conform to all of the conditions and rules that apply to employees in the organization.
  • Exercise ethical workplace conduct and all required safety procedures.
  • Set goals and outcomes for learning at the workplace.
  • Work on enhancing their academic, professional and personal skills.
  • Maintain employer confidentiality at all times.
  • Accept feedback and suggestions for improvement in a positive manner.
  • Participate in work site visits with the Co-op Advisor.
  • Resolve any problems or issues that may arise at the workplace in a prompt, professional manner.
  • Advise the employer and their Co-op Advisor of any concerns or problems with their work assignment or environment as soon as issues arise.
  • Successfully complete all of the requirements of the work term course as specified in the course outline.

Co-op Office

Â鶹AV is responsible for:

  • Ensuring the integrity of its Workplace Education (Co-op) programs.
  • Developing and maintaining current curricula which reflect the needs of employers.
  • Providing relevant academic training for students in their chosen career field.
  • Providing adequate resources to the Workplace Education (Co-op) programs.
  • Developing programs which meet the needs of employers.

The Co-op Team is responsible for:

  • Facilitating development of work placement opportunities relevant to the program area.
  • Fostering fair and equitable treatment of students and employers through the placement process.
  • Assisting in preparing students with an understanding of the workplace.
  • Monitoring and evaluating the students’ work terms and the learning outcomes achieved.
  • Assessing the work term and the students work term report as per learning outcomes achieved.
