Student Awards

The Rathlyn Fellowship

Thanks to the generosity of Roger Warren, two fellowships for $12,500 are being offered to Indigenous students to support the writing of an MA or Doctoral thesis at Â鶹AV. The applicant’s research must focus on some aspect of the study of Indigenous Canada. Based on progress reports and participation in the activities of the Institute, the award may be renewed.

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED

  1. The completed Nomination Form signed by the Applicant and the Chair/Director of the Department at Â鶹AV.
  2. One recent letter of recommendation, original or certified (e.g. letter from thesis supervisor or copy of letter submitted in support of admission);
  3. Description of applicant’s research project. (Maximum 2 pages).

Mellon Indigenous Studies and Community Engagement Initiative (ISCEI) Rathlyn Fellowship

Student Travel AwardÌý

The Indigenous Studies and Community Engagement Initiative (ISCEI) is supported by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and is designed to build and expand on existing Indigenous initiatives on and off campus; to help provide a nexus for Indigenous scholarship and community-building; to generate new cross-University synergies and community partnerships; and to add to strategic capacity building in areas where Â鶹AV can have the greatest impact.

Applications for student travel awards should be submitted as PDFs to Professor Noelani Arista (Director, ) atÌýiscei [at] mcgill.ca.

Eligibility:

  • Designed to support off-campus travel which contributes to Indigenous research and community engagement––either by:
    Supporting travel for Â鶹AV students who self-identify as Indigenous to events which will further their professional development or
    Supporting travel for Â鶹AV students (Indigenous and not) to advance Indigenous studies and community engagement research, projects, and initiatives.
  • Full-time registered Â鶹AV students only (undergraduate or graduate level); must be registered as full-time Â鶹AV student at the times of application, award payment, and travel
  • To support travel for research, community engagement, conference or workshop attendance, and collaborative research outside of the university

Deadlines:
March 30th 2022 (for travel January 1st through August 30th 2022)
September 10th 2021 (for travel September 1 through January 31st 2022)

Important note: These awards will still be given out despite current circumstances surrounding travel and Covid-19. We welcome applications including creative solutions to travel that you might not be able to do at this time, or to support research that you planned to do via travel but that might now be done in a different way.ÌýIf you have already applied without thinking of such things, we will contact you to inquire about alternatives and you will still be considered for the travel award. Feel free to email us and we'd be happy help you think of ways to modify your plans, if need be. Thank you.

Undergraduate Awards:

Best Paper in Indigenous StudiesÌý

This award recognizes the most thought-provoking essay written by an undergraduate student in an Indigenous Studies Program course. Please note that the paper must come from a class that has an INDG course code. Papers will be nominated by a professor or teaching assistant. The award is valued at $500. It will be chosen at the end of the academic year.

Indigenous Community Engagement Award

FileThis award is to recognize a dedicated and passionate undergraduate Indigenous student at Â鶹AV who has shown distinguished leadership and involvement in an Indigenous community, organization, and/or community based-initiative. All activities on or off campus and paid or volunteer will be considered. The award is valued at $500 and is designed for a graduating student. The deadline to apply is May 1st.
