Withdrawal from B.Ed. Field Experience or MATL Internship
- Before the Field Experience or Internship starts, a studentwho wishesto withdraw for any reason must ensure that they drop the associated EDFE or EDIN course in Minerva and notify the Internships & Student Affairs Office at least 2 weeks prior to the start date so that we have ample time to notify the host school.
- After the Field Experience or Internship starts, a student who wishes toɾٳfor any reason must immediately notify the Internships & Student Affairs Office. Based on the circumstances and reason for withdrawal, the ISA Director will determine the final outcome of the EDFE or EDIN course. Typically withdrawal requests are without refund after the placement starts.
Dismissal from aB.Ed. Field Experience or MATL Internship
Student teachers may be removed from their Field Experience or Internship placement at any time, either at the request of their host school or the ISA Office. In this situation, the ISA Director will determine the outcome of the placement. Students may request to meet with the ISA Director during this process.
Circumstances that could lead todismissal include, but are not limited to:
- Pre-requisite courses not successfully completed
- Exceeding the number of permissible unexcused absences for co-requisite courses (consult the syllabus for each course)
- Failure to pass a judicial record check(if required by the host school board/school)
- Unprofessional behaviour and/orbehaviour that contravenes the 鶹AV Principles of Practice, Behaviour and Ethical Conduct for Teacher Candidates
- Failure to make the improvements outlined in a Competency Improvement Plan (CIP)by the date indicated
In the case of dismissal,MATL studentswho are using apaid contractto fulfill their Internship (EDIN) requirement should note that the employment relationship with the school board/school remains separate from the academic relationship with 鶹AV. For example:
- Internship is concludedby 鶹AV because the student is missing pre-requisite courses; the student remains employed as a teacher at the discretion of the school
- Internship is concludedby 鶹AV becauseimprovements outlined ina Competency Improvement Plan (CIP)have not been addressed; the student remains employed as a teacher at the discretion of the school
- Internship is concludedby the school board/school; the ISA Directorwill decide the outcome of the Internship course (EDIN)
When a B.Ed. student teacheris dismissed from an FE, possible outcomes include:
- Reassignment in the same semester (subject to timeline and availability of placements)
- Withdrawal:
- In the case of field placements, a W grade is assigned only under exceptional circumstances (with supporting documentation).
- A W grade cannot be assigned because a student is unhappy with the outcome of the field placement or the placement itself.
- Supporting documentation must be submitted in the same term in which a student was registered for the field placement.
- Please note, the submission of supporting documentation does not guarantee a W grade.
- Permission to repeatthe Field Experience; a grade of 'D' is entered for the EDFE course, signifying that the Field Experience was not passed successfully; the student will repeat the Field Experience (EDFE) course when next regularly offered in their program; please note, students may repeat a Field Experience only once throughout the course of their program
- Failure of the Field Experience following unsatisfactory evaluation reports; a grade of 'F' is entered for the EDFE course, signifying that the Field Experience was not passed successfully; as per Faculty regulations, students with a grade of 'F' in a Field Experience will immediately be placed into Unsatisfactory Standing and be required to withdraw from the program; students are eligible to apply for readmission after one calendar year and will be subject to a review by the Student Affairs Committee
When anMATL student-teacheris dismissed from an Internship, possible outcomes include:
- Reassignment in the same semester (subject to timeline and availability of placements)
- Withdrawal:
- In the case of field placements, a request for a W grade can only be made through the MATL Coordinator and will be considered under exceptional circumstances only (with supporting documentation). Requests are then adjudicated and decided upon by Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.
- A W grade cannot be assigned because a student is unhappy with the outcome of the field placement or the placement itself.
- Supporting documentation must be submitted in the same term in which a student was registered for the field placement.
- Please note, the submission of supporting documentation does not guarantee a W grade.
- Permission to repeatthe Internship following unsatisfactory evaluation reports; a grade of 'F' is entered for the EDIN course, signifying that the Internship was not passed successfully, as per Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies' Failure Policy; please note, graduate students may only receive two 'F's in the course of their program; if this is a student's first 'F', they will continue on in their program and repeat the Internship when next regularly offered; if this is a student's second 'F', they will be withdrawn from the university
- Failure of the Internship following; a grade of 'F' is entered for the EDIN course, signifying that the Internship was not passed successfully; if this is a student's second 'F', they will be withdrawn from the university; if this is a student's first 'F' but it is determined by the ISA Director that withdrawal from the program is warranted, an Unsatisfactory Performance Report will be forwarded to the Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies who will make the final determination as to the student's continuation in or withdrawal from the university
The ISA Office reserves the right, following a dismissal, to refuse to provide a reassignment and/or issue a withdrawal with refund.
Co-requisite Course Outcomes:In cases where a Student Teacher withdraws or is withdrawn from a Field Experience and/or is issued an early dismissal, the outcome of co-requisite courses and associated fees will be determined by the ISA Director in consultation with appropriate representatives from the department(s) offering the co-requisite(s).
Appeal of a Field Experience/Internship Grade
MATL and B.Ed. students have the right to appeal any final outcome of a Field Experience (EDFE) or Internship (EDIN) coursethrough the Student Affairs Committee. For more information, please visit this page.
