A transformative opportunity to experience empirical research first hand: design and submit a research proposal, conduct the field or archival research on campus for four weeks in May, and submit your own empirical research paper.

Shantou University has a unique library, housing an extensive collection of records of Chaoshan's people and their stories throughout history. Shantou City has played a significant role in various Chinese dynasties, and the university's library archives are a testament to the region's rich culture, literature, languages, and philosophy.

When thinking of your topic, please keep in mind that this is a short, one-month trip and that all of your research will have to be conducted on Shantou University's campus. 

Eligibility

  • Open to full-time (Fall 2024 and Winter 2025) Faculty of Arts (BA and MA) students in good standing
  • Minimum CGPA 2.7 in Fall 2024, and must be maintained in Winter 2025
  • Must be returning to Â鶹AV in the same academic program in Fall 2025
    • Awards are only released if all eligibility criteria for award disbursement are met:  (or)
  • Must have the level of Chinese language sufficient to conduct research
  • Must have attended one of the information sessions, find dates and links for the sessions here
  • Must have completed the Â鶹AV Pre-departure Orientation course before applying
  • Must receive Â鶹AV credits for the course (i.e. To apply to this program, you must verify with your academic department that you will be able to register for a "Reading Course" or "Special Topics Course," and you must find a professor to supervise you.)

Required Pre-departure Orientation Certificate

  • A valid certificate of completion of the Â鶹AV Pre-departure Orientation is mandatory for your application.
  • Register for the course and complete it before applying.
  • The Pre-Departure Orientation is offered monthly, so  and complete it in time.
  • Certificates remain valid for one year and must cover the entire duration of the program in May 2024.

Application Process

  1. Review the eligibility criteria
  2. Consult the LKS Student Handbook thoroughly
  3. Make sure to attend at least one of the information sessions, they are a mandatory requirement of your application
  4. Consult with your departmental advisor and verify that your department offers "Reading Courses" or "Special Topics Courses" for which this Program could qualify
  5. Find a professor willing to supervise you and grade your research paper at the end of the program
  6. Prepare: 
    • Your Letter of Intent and Advanced Research Proposal in one document
      • Letter of intent (500-750 words): indicate the reasons why you believe this research opportunity at Shantou University is relevant to you and will enhance your program of study at Â鶹AV and larger educational or career objectives. Indicate also how you will cope with conducting a new kind of work (field research) in a new kind of environment (STU).
      • Advanced Research Proposal (250-500 words): Your advanced research proposal should include a proposed research question and methodology.
      • Approval from Â鶹AV professor: Your research proposal should include a signature from the professor who has agreed to supervise your project, and the mention: "I approve of this proposal and agree to supervise a 3-credit independent study course in the summer of 2025"

    • Your Unofficial Transcript (PDF format, downloaded from Minerva) 
    • Your Pre-departure Orientation certificate
    • A reference letter from a Â鶹AV Professor (to be sent directly by the professor to shantou.arts [at] mcgill.ca (shantou[dot]arts[at]mcgill[dot]ca) by the application deadline)
