McLennan Redpath Terrace Project – Phase 3
The third and final phase of the McLennan-Redpath Terrace Renovation Project is slated to start on June 3rd, 2013 and is scheduled to be completed by the end of the Fall term. Demolition and reconstruction work will take place between 7am and 3pm, with heavy drilling to occur between 7 and 10am. The scope of work for this project includes the completion of the resurfacing of the terrace and restructuring of the supporting walls. A complete overhaul of the main Redpath entrance will also occur at this time including the removal of one interior stair case leading down to the food court and improvements to the alternate staircase located to the left of the entrance. Interior and exterior doorways will also be moved slightly and replaced with new materials.
During the course of this project, Library access will only be available through the McLennan Library Building entrance.
Due to health and safety concerns and to ensure that the project moves as swiftly as possible, the entire street level of the Redpath Library Building will be closed from June 3rd through August 30th. The Food Court, the Cyberthèque, the Copy Centre, the washroom and access to the tunnel will be closed. Please note that the interior stairwell will be accessible, enabling our users to access the material housed in the Redpath open storage area in the basement of the Redpath Library Building.

Lighting & Occupancy Sensor Retrofit at McLennan-Redpath Complex to begin in June
The 鶹AV Utilities and Energy Management office coordinates campus-wide projects and renovation work in order to help to reduce energy consumption. As part of this initiative, all floors of the McLennan-Redpath Library Complex will be undergoing this retrofit from the beginning of June to August.
Scope of work
- Replacement of all T12 ballasts with T8 ballasts making light fixtures more energy and cost efficient.
- Installation of motion sensors in public and staff areas.
- Two types of switches and motion sensors (short & long range) will be installed depending on the area. Sensors react to motion and sound. Staff areas will be fitted with switches that can also control light manually.
- Motion sensors in public areas (i.e. group study spaces, stacks) will turn on automatically.
- For health and safety purposes, main corridors will continue to be permanently lit. Motion sensors will not be installed in corridors.
- Work will begin in the McLennan basement, followed by the 6th floor. Work will then move downward, from floor to floor.
- A different retrofit that accommodates rare materials is planned for Rare Books and Special Collections.
Impact on students and staff members
- Work scheduled from 7 am to 3 pm.
- Light fixture/motion sensor installation will take approximately 10 minutes per fixture/sensor.
- Protective plastic sheeting will be placed on staff work areas affected.
- Department supervisors will be notified by the project manager when work is to be done in their area.
- Noise levels minimal.
- Power interruptions will occur early mornings (7-9 am) depending on areas.
