Description
A slight depression (arrow) is evident between the left and right ventricles at the heart’s apex.
Comment
A bifid ventricular apex is very uncommon. The separation ranges in depth from a slight notch (as in this case) to several centimeters in length. It may be an isolated finding or associated with other congenital cardiac abnormalities. The pathogenesis is uncertain, but presumably is related to abnormal development of the interventricular septum.
