2020-2021 Golden Violin Award Finalists Announced

We are pleased to announce that theÌýthree finalistsÌýchosen to compete for the 2020-2021ÌýGoldenÌýViolinÌýAwardÌýareÌýviolinistsÌýRussell Iceberg,ÌýAlicia Choi, andÌýAstrid Nakamura. These string playersÌýwereÌýselectedÌýfromÌýa stellarÌýsemi-final round held onÌýSaturdayÌýMay 15, 2021Ìýat Pollack Hall.ÌýÌý

For the final,Ìýcandidates will present a program of 40 minutes of music of their choice, excluding repertoire presented at theÌýsemi-final round.ÌýThe jury forÌýboth theÌýsemi-final andÌýfinal roundÌýisÌýcomprisedÌýofÌýSchulich School of Music faculty membersÌýAssistant Professor of CelloÌýElizabeth Dolin,ÌýAssociate Professor ofÌýViolinÌýViolaineÌýMelançon,ÌýAssociate Professor of Viola and GeneralÌýArtisticÌýDirector of MISQA,ÌýAndré RoyÌýalong withÌýinvited guestsÌýMarianne Dugal,Ìý2nd associateÌýandÌýconcertmasterÌýof the OSMÌýas well as violin professor at the Conservatoire de musique de MontrealÌýandÌýAnne Robert, founding member of Trio Hochelaga andÌýviolin professorÌýatÌýtheÌýConservatoire de musique de MontréalÌýand the FacultyÌýof MusicÌýatÌýtheÌýUniversité de Montréal. The juryÌýisÌýchaired by Dr.ÌýDouglasÌýMcNabney,ÌýAssociate DeanÌýofÌýAcademic and Student AffairsÌýat the Schulich School of Music.Ìý

The winner receives a generous scholarship, valued this year at $30,000, as well as a smaller likeness of the violin in the form of a 14-karat gold lapel pin. In addition, the winner will perform in the upcoming Schulich concert season.Ìý

The Golden Violin Award was established in 2006 by businessman and philanthropist Seymour Schulich, a year after he donated $20 million to Â鶹AV’s Schulich School of Music. Made of pewter and gold plate, the Golden Violin remains on permanent display in Â鶹AV’s Marvin Duchow Music Library.Ìý
