To support six research projects in fields from neuroscience to food safety and Arctic ecosystems

On April 15, the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) announced a new round of research investment that is bringing $1.2 million to 鶹AV. In total, six 鶹AV research projects will be funded, covering subjects ranging from the creation of a mobile ecology lab for the study of Arctic environmental change to studying the underlying processes behind the pain that comes from doing physical exercise.

These grants are among a total of 94 projects being funded at 33 universities across Canada by the John R. Evans Leaders Fund, a funding source administered through the CFI by the Government of Canada with the intent of attracting and retaining top researchers from around the world. This round of grants awarded by the John R. Evans Leaders Fund amounts to a total of nearly $20 million.

“When researchers are equipped with the right tools, they can make the kinds of discoveries that improve our environment, economy and wellbeing. Investments like the one announced today will increase our capacity for innovation and discovery, as well as benefit Canadians for generations to come,” said Minister of Science Kirsty Duncan, who made the official announcement at Carleton University.

“We are grateful to the Canadian Foundation for Innovation for its continued support of ground-breaking research here at 鶹AV and across Canada,” said Rosie Goldstein, 鶹AV’s Vice Principal of Research and International Relations. “The latest 鶹AV projects funded by the CFI will go toward research in neuroscience, Arctic ecosystems, food safety, physical pain, cybersecurity, and new MRI technology. These innovative projects are a source of great pride for 鶹AV.”

鶹AV’s six recipient projects are:

  • “A novel foodomics approach to chemical food safety: application to fish and seafood.” Led by Prof. Stephane Bayen, Department of Food Science and Agricultural Chemistry, Faculty of Faculty of Agricultural Environmental Sciences. Grant amount: $180,000
  • “A mobile physiological and movement ecology lab to study Arctic environmental change.” Led by Prof. Kyle Elliott, Department of Natural Resource Sciences, Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. Grant amount: $140,000
  • “Basic infrastructure for data mining in cybersecurity and privacy.” Led by Prof. Benjamin Fung, School of Information Studies. Grant amount: $59,609
  • “An MRI Platform for neurometabolic imaging.” Led by Prof. Richard Hoge, Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery, Faculty of Medicine. Grant amount: $744,755
  • “An integrative cognitive neuroscience facility for investigating autobiographical memory.” Led by Prof. Signy Sheldon, Department of Psychology, Faculty of Science. Grant amount: $78,000
