Course Overlap

You will not receive additional credit toward your BA听degree for any course that overlaps in content with a course for which you have already received credit at 麻豆AV, CEGEP, at another university, or on the basis of Advanced Placement exams, Advanced Level results, International Baccalaureate Diploma, or a French Baccalaureate.听 Details on advanced standing and transfer credits can be found here.听

If you have any question regarding potential course overlap, it is your responsibility to consult with an advisor at听Arts OASIS or the department offering the course听and to be aware of any restrictions specified in the course description.听 You can find full details on the course overlap听policy in the .

Common Course Overlap Issues

Below you will find a table of some of the most common course overlap issues that BA students will encounter. This is NOT a complete list of all possible equivalent courses or situations!听 Students should consult the course listings on Minerva (read the NOTES section of the listing and click on the CRN and then the听course title to see all the restrictions for a class) and in the eCalendar to verify that a course does not overlap with one previously completed at 麻豆AV or with advanced standing/transfer credits.

Where a course "overlap" exists, students will not be permitted to retain credit for the overlapping course. This is for either the scenario where the initial course was previously taken and passed at 麻豆AV (or awarded as advanced standing or as transfer credit), or for where it is being taken concurrently with the overlapping course.

Biology BIOL 115 BIOL 111 or BIOL 112 BIOL 115 is intended as a general introductory Biology class for non-Science students. Students who want a more extensive background in Biology or are completing med school prerequisites may prefer to do the course sequence of BIOL 111 and BIOL 112.

  • MATH 122听is only open to Desautels Faculty of Management students.
  • Despite the stated overlap in the course description for MATH 122, Arts OASIS will exceptionally permit students to retain credit for both MATH 122 and any of the overlapping MATH courses.

MATH 139

MATH 140
  • Credit will only be given for ONE听introductory Calculus class. 听
  • MATH 139 includes pre-Calculus, as well as the material in MATH 140,听 and is meant for students with no high school Calculus background. Details on introductory Math听classes can be found听here.
MATH 140 MATH 150

The course sequence of MATH 139听or听MATH 140 + MATH 141 + MATH 222 is the equivalent to MATH 150 + MATH 151. Details on the different sequences听 of Calculus听classes can be found here.
MATH 141 MATH 151

The course sequence of MATH 139 or MATH 140 + MATH 141 + MATH 222 is the equivalent to MATH 150 + MATH 151. Details on the different sequences of Calculus听classes can be found听here.
MATH 150 MATH 139 or MATH 140听or MATH 141 The course sequence of MATH 139 or MATH 140 + MATH 141 + MATH 222 is the equivalent to MATH 150 + MATH 151. Details on the different sequences of Calculus classes can be found here.
MATH 151 MATH 141 or听MATH 222 The course sequence of MATH 139 or MATH 140 + MATH 141 + MATH 222 is the equivalent to MATH 150 + MATH 151. Details on the different sequences of Calculus classes can be found here.
Computer Science

COMP 250

COMP 202

 COMP 202 can be taken for credit BEFORE COMP 250, but not after nor in the same semester
COMP 250 or COMP 202 or COMP 203 or COMP 208 COMP 102 COMP 102 can be taken for credit BEFORE any of COMP 250/COMP 202/COMP 203/COMP 208, but not after nor in the same semester
Economics ECON 230 ECON 208 ECON 208 can be taken for credit BEFORE ECON 230, but not after nor in the same semester

ECON 250

Credit can be retained for both ECON 230D1/D2 and ECON 250/D1/D2. However, only one of these courses will fulfill program requirements, while the other will count as an elective.
听

ECON 227

ECON 257

Credit can only be retained for one of these courses. Please review the section below for information on other Statistics course overlaps.
Statistics
  1. You will not be allowed to retain credit for more than one of the following courses - should you enroll in them concurrently or subsequently - given that significant overlap exists between each of them: AEMA 310, BIOL 373, ECON 227D1/D2, ECON 257D1/D2, EDPE 375,听GEOG 202, MATH 203, MGCR 271, MGCR 273, POTH 204, SOCI 350.
    • Examples:听
      • If you have Advanced Standing or Exemption for MATH 203:
        • If you enrol in SOCI 350, it will be excluded from your credit count &听GPA.
      • Concurrent Enrollment in GEOG 202 and ECON 227D1/D2:听
        • You will be permitted to retain credit for ECON 227D1/D2 (6 credits), but not for GEOG 202 (3 credits).听

  2. If you have already received credit for PSYC 204 and should you enroll in any of the following concurrently or subsequently, you will not receive credit for them: AEMA 310, BIOL 373, ECON 227D1/D2, ECON 257D1/D2, EDPE 375, GEOG 202, MATH 203, MGCR 271, MGCR 273, POTH 204, SOCI 350.
    • Examples:
      • Retaining all credits:
        • If you have Advanced Standing exemption for MATH 203 and enrol in PSYC 204:
          • You will retain credit for PSYC 204.
        • If you enrol in MATH 203 in one term and PSYC 204 in a subsequent term:
          • You will retain credit for both courses.
      • Not retaining all credits:
        • If you enrol in PSYC 204 in one term and MATH 203 concurrently or in a subsequent term:
          • You will only retain credit for PSYC 204.
        • If you enrol in PSYC 204 in one term and ECON 227D1/D2 or 257D1/D2 the same or following year:
          • You will only retain credit for ECON 227D1/D2 or for ECON 257D1/D2 (6 credits), and not for PSYC 204 (3 credits)
  3. You will not be allowed to retain credit for more than one of the following courses - should you enroll in them concurrently or subsequently - given that significant overlap exists between each of them: AEMA 411,听ECON 227D1/D2, ECON 257D1/D2,听 GEOG 351,听MATH 204听PSYC 305,听SOCI 461,听with the exception that you may receive credit for both听PSYC 305听and either听ECON 227D1/D2听or听ECON 257D1/D2.
    • Examples:
      • If you enrol in MATH 204 in one term and PSYC 305 concurrently or in a subsequent term:
        • You will retain credit for MATH 204, but not for PSYC 305.
      • If you enrol in ECON 227D1/D2 in one year and GEOG 351 concurrently or in a subsequent year:
        • You will听retain credit for ECON 227D1/D2 (6 credits), but not for GEOG 351.

Special Note About Statistics Courses:

There is significant overlap between many statistics courses offered by different academic departments. Ensure that you read the course description in the eCalendar and on Minerva very carefully when registering for a statistics course, pay attention to any restrictions, and听keep the following in mind:

  • U0 Students:鈥疌onsider waiting until you鈥檝e declared your programs before taking an introductory statistics course.鈥疶his ensures you take the course that aligns with your chosen program.
  • CEGEP students:听refer to the CEGEP transfer credit page.
  • Course Descriptions:听Read the course descriptions in the eCalendar and on Minerva carefully, paying attention to any restrictions.
  • Consult Advisors:鈥疘f your Major/Minor/Honours program requires a statistics course, consult with a departmental/program advisor before registering. They may suggest alternative courses to fulfill program requirements if there is an overlap.
  • If one or more of your Major/Minor/Honours programs requires a statistics course: consult with a departmental/program advisor before registering, and refer to the eCalendar here.
  • PSYC 204: this is an introductory statistics course. Refer to Rules #1 and #3, left. If you are enrolled in a Psychology program (eg. Major, Minor or Honours) where PSYC 204 is required, take note of their specific requirements as they pertain to equivalencies / overlap for that course in particular.

Note: If you complete听a听 course听listed above and it is determined you had already completed it in a prior term (either at 麻豆AV, or elsewhere, or not per the conditions cited), your grade and course credit will be E-flagged as not counting towards your degree.听
