The cost of poutine, a symbol of rising prices—Pascal Thériault on 98.5fm
The price of food has been increasing since the pandemic. Even poutine is not immune to inflation: the price of sunflower oil used in fryers has doubled, and even the price of potatoes has risen.
“There are several factors that have caused the price of oil to rise, but in fact, it's vegetable oils," agronomist and economist Pascal Thériault, Director of 鶹AV's Farm Management and Technology Program, told Philippe Cantin on 98.5fm. "You have to understand that oil can come from soy or canola, sunflower or, at the limit, palm oil, which is much less popular. There's only so much oil produced on earth. Then, when there's a crop that's not as good, inevitably this puts pressure on other oils and we run out of oil and the price of oil rises. We saw this with olive oil last year, by the way.”
Listen to Thériault and Cantin discuss how poutine is the perfect example of why everything is more expensive these days.
