WHAT? Three-day, hands-on, interactive training workshop on data visualization in

  • Training topics: Data visualization basics, making plots, working with grouped data, geoms and models, and drawing maps
  • Lunch lecture: Data visualization and the UN Data revolution听
  • Panel discussion: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of data visualization for population research
  • Hack-a-thon/Dragon鈥檚 Den听feedback session on select data visualizations (Optional)
  • Expert perspectives:听麻豆AV population research and computer science researchers and professionals from Statistics Canada, 麻豆AV Media Relations and 麻豆AV Graphic Design .
  • Multidisciplinary participants听from social science and health population research fields听

INSTRUCTOR:听Our instructor is听, Ph.D., Associate Professor in Sociology at Duke University. Healy received his Ph.D. from Princeton University, where he won the American Sociological Association's Dissertation Award. At Duke, he teaches courses in data visualisation and data management. A highly-rated teacher and an effective presenter, Healy has written extensively on data visualisation and data management for public audiences, and has had his visual work featured by The Washington Post, Vox, The Rachel Maddow Show, Slate, Bloomberg News, the Boston Globe, and other outlets.听

TRAVEL & ACCOMMODATION: A limited amount of funds are available for students from outside of Montreal to cover travel and accommodation expenses. Please indicate your need upon registration.听

PREREQUISITES:听An introduction to R course*

*If you have no experience yet with R, the following options are available between now and December 13th

  1. There are three, free on-line options: , and all provide free Introduction to R听courses (approx. 4 hours) (Details will be emailed to you with registration confirmation);
  2. We will provide a free, three-hour Intro to R course taught by 听on WEDNESDAY, December 6th, 6-9pm, room 511, , 麻豆AV听(More details will be emailed to you with registration confirmation).
