McIntyre Building, Priority Building Envelop Repairs

Type: Construction / Status: Design

Completed in 1962 after plans prepared by Marshall and Merrett Architects, the McIntyre Building houses Â鶹AV’s Faculty of Medicine.Ìý An iconic circular tower and a fixture of the Montreal skyline, the building’s skin was composed of precast concrete panels and steel-sash windows assembled in an artisanal manner. Pre-dating the rain screen curtain wall, the building suffered from severe water infiltration, condensation and air pressure problems and as early as 1967, studies were under way for improving the performance of its building envelope.

Project Description:

Installation of temporary protection of the facade concrete panels, above the pedestrian and vehicle access. The base of the concrete panels shows signs of degradation: the rust from the rebar caused the corners of multiples panels to fracture. The objective of the steel mesh is to capture potentially loose pieces by wrapping around the base of the panels, while the heating cables will prevent the accumulation of ice in the protections.

Project Scope:

This is a portion of project 19-163 that was split for administrative reasons.
Temporary protections and heating cables above pedestrian and vehicle access.
