Historical Summary

The Six Nations consist of the: Mohawk, Oneida, Cayuga, Seneca, Onondaga,a nd Tuscarora.These Nations unified under the Great Tree of Peace. During the American Revolution, Captain Joseph Brant led many from the Iroquois Confederacy to ally with the British. For their loyalty to the Crown, the Six Nations would be deeded a tract of land along the Grand River. Eventually, most of the land would be stripped from them and they would be reduced to present 46,000 acres. Recognized as “Six Nations Reserve No. 40”.

Location

The main reserve is located approximately 25 km southwest of the city of Hamilton, Ontario; between the cities of Brantford, Caledonia, and Hagersville. The Six Nations of the Grand River is bounded by Brant County and Haldimand County and to the north: Mississauga of the New Credit First Nation, Haldimand County, and Norfolk County to the south; Haldimand County to the east; and Brant County to the west. Physical boundaries of the Reserve include Brant County to the north; Regional Road #20 to the south; Oneida Road/CN Railway tracks to the east; Bateman Line to the west.
