A group of Â鶹AV students and alums who worked on the Myko Social Score app have received the 2015 Catalyst Award for Excellence in Applied Student Research.

The Award is sponsored by the Â鶹AV Office of Sustainability and is decided by a distinguished jury. DCL candidate Juan Pinto, undergrad law student Etienne Ravilet Guzman, as well as alumni Carolina Cruz-Vinaccia (LLM’11) and Guillaume Béal (LLM’14), were among the members of the multidisciplinary team that received the group award.

Students who will have completed the first two years of the BCL/LLB program  by the end of the Winter Term 2015 are invited to apply for a position as Tutorial Leader for 2015-2016.

Students may elect to become Legal Methodology Tutorial Leaders for either the 1st year Introductory Legal Research course (14 positions) or the 2nd year Legal Ethics and Advocacy course (8 positions).

We are pleased to announce that Professor Hoi Kong has accepted to serve the Faculty as Associate Dean (Academic) for a two-year term starting September 1st, 2014.

As Dean Daniel Jutras indicated, “Hoi has agreed to take on this important task as we begin a most important stage in our undergraduate program review and overhaul.  Hoi’s commitment to our students is undeniable (as attested by the John W. Durnford Award he received last year), and his creativity and rigor in thinking about pedagogy and curriculum will be precious over the course of the next two years.â€

A teacher, first and foremost, Roderick A. Macdonald will be remembered as one of the most important scholars and thinkers in Â鶹AV’s history. He was a mentor and inspiration to generations of students and law professors, and a transformative force at the Faculty of Law, the University, in Canadian society, and in the broader world.

Old Chancellor Day Hall, the Faculty of Law’s most iconic building, is closing at the end of June for 16 months as we undertake much-needed renovations to upgrade the building’s heating, electrical systems, plumbing, windows and more, while respecting its historical features.

Faculty and staff who were in OCDH have been relocated either to New Chancellor Day Hall and 3674-3690 Peel Street, or to rented office space near Â鶹AV’s Roddick Gates at 2001 Â鶹AV College Avenue, suite 750.

Third year Law student Ngozi Okidegbe has been selected to present her paper, "Litigating HIV-related discrimination in Nigeria: implications of Georgina Ahamefule v. Imperial Medical Centre and Dr. Molokwu," – written under the supervision of Professor Vrinda Narain – at the 20th International AIDS Conference, which will take place July 20-25, 2014, in Melbourne, Australia.

On May 28, Roderick Macdonald was awarded in absentia the Â鶹AV Medal for Exceptional Academic Achievement, one of the University’s highest honours. Macdonald received the Â鶹AV Medal as part of the Convocation ceremony for the Faculty of Law, where he taught thousands of students over the course of a distinguished career that spanned more than three decades. Professor Daniel Jutras, Dean of the Faculty of Law, accepted the Medal in Professor Macdonald’s name.

The BCL/LLB graduating class is setting out to change the face of the Faculty, with a crowdfunded class gift aimed at expanding the Faculty’s photo collection.

“Students today are pursuing a hugely diverse range of careers after exiting the Â鶹AV gates,†the project page explains. “We believe they present a wonderful opportunity to broaden this collection and to allow the enormously varied careers of our alums to shine.â€

Thanks to a generous donation from the Li Ka Shing Foundation (Canada) to Â鶹AV, ten students from Â鶹AV’s Faculty of Law and ten students in Shantou University’s Law School (Guangdong Province, China), will be doing a summer law program together from May 19 to 30. The program, which alternates between Montreal and Shantou, will take place in China this year.

We are happy to announce that Emilie Conway, BCL/LLB’13, has been selected by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to participate in the Court’s 2014-2015 Judicial Assistants Programme.

Judicial Assistants are chosen to work directly with one judge, helping him or her in the preparation for hearings and the drafting of judgments.

Ms Conway was selected to work directly with the President of the Court, Judge Peter Tomka. She will begin work in September 2014.
