The Faculty of Law was delighted to learn that one of its students received a Scarlet Key Award during a pining ceremony held at Â鶹AV’s Faculty Club on March 26, 2014.

Éloïse Gagné, who served as the LSA’s president in 2013-2014 and was a member of the 2013 editorial board of the Â鶹AV Law Journal, received her Scarlet Key pin from Principal Suzanne Fortier, in recognition of her efforts to help support Â鶹AV and the broader community.

Michelle Lahey (1L) is one of three Canadian students selected for a Jaimie Anderson internship in Ottawa this summer. Starting in May, Michelle will be working in the office of MP John Williamson (New Brunswick Southwest).

As Michelle tells it, “My passion is the Canadian political process, and I hope to work on the Hill in some capacity later in my career – I am absolutely delighted to be given this once in a lifetime opportunity!â€

The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that Me Helena Lamed, Director of the Legal Methodology Program and Faculty Supervisor of the Legal Clinic Course, and Dr. Nandini Ramanujam, Executive Director and Director of Programs of the Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism, have been appointed to the rank of Associate Professor (Professional) in the Faculty of Law, effective April 1, 2014.

Mediation at Â鶹AV (), a community mediation initiative run by law students, recently received a generous donation of $2,500 to support its activities. The gift was made by Me Eric Cadl, Me Douglas Mitchell (BCL’88, LLB’88), Me Odette Jobin-Laberge, the Hon. Louise Otis, and Me Sylvain Lussier, five Montreal practitioners who are among the authors of the book Recours et procédures en appel, which received the Walter Owen Prize.

LSA President Selected from a Pool of 500 Applicants

This year’s President of the Â鶹AV Law Student Association, Éloïse Gagné, is one of 11 Canadian university students who will spend a day shadowing some of the country’s top senior executives.

Gagné will shadow Thierry Vandal, President and CEO of Hydro-Québec, on February 12. The fourth-year student will have the opportunity to put into practice the concepts she has been learning at the Faculty, and to acquire real-world tools and skills she’ll need when launching her career.

The Nappert Competition is open to all students, junior scholars and junior practitioners from around the world. To be eligible for the prize, authors must be either currently enrolled in a B.C.L, LL.B., J.D., LL.M., D.C.L., or Ph.D. program (or their local equivalents). Those who are no longer in school must have taken their most recent degree within the last three years, or have been admitted to the bar (or the local equivalent) for the first time and for no more than three years (whichever is later).

A team of five Â鶹AV students won the 2013 Hult Prize, valued at $1 million for their social enterprise project to secure food for undernourished communities in urban slums. Among them is Shobhita Soor, a Law/MBA student.

The Faculties of Arts and Law are happy to announce that Professor Ronald Niezen, a former Chair of Â鶹AV’s Department of Anthropology who held the Canada Research Chair in the Comparative Study of Indigenous Rights and Identity, has been appointed as the first incumbent of the Katharine A. Pearson Chair in Civil Society and Public Policy.

The Faculty was happy to learn that Marvin H. Coleby, VP external of the Black Law Students Association of Â鶹AV (BLSAM), has been elected President of the Black Law Students Association of Canada (BLSAC) for the 2013-2014 Term.

Marvin Coleby campaigned on a platform of youth empowerment, the refocusing of cultural and racial rights, closer Canada-US ties, and the implications of common and civil jurisdiction mixing for Black jurists.

Six students of Â鶹AV's Faculty of Law will serve as law clerks to justices of the Supreme Court of Canada in 2014. They are Marc-André Roy (´³³Ü²õ³Ù¾±³¦±ðÌý°ä°ù´Ç³¾·É±ð±ô±ô), Nicola Langille (Justice Fish’s successor), , Zain Naqi (Justice Moldaver), Molly Krishtalka (Justice Karakatsanis), Ian Dahlman (Justice LeBel’s successor), and Marcus Moore (Chief Justice McLachlin) [not in photo]. They are all in their third year of the BCL/LLB program.

The Institute of Air and Space Law (IASL), of the Faculty of Law at Â鶹AV, invites applications to the Arsenault Postdoctoral Research Fellowships. The IASL intends to appoint one or two Postdoctoral Research Fellow(s), to start 1 September 2013.

The position(s) is (are) funded by the Erin J C Arsenault Trust Fund. The research team is led by Prof. Ram Jakhu, Associate Professor, and Associate Director of the Centre for Research in Air and Space Law. The position(s) is (are) for one year, with the possibility of renewal for a second year.
